How To Create A Custom Role In Business Technology Platform

Introduction

  • Business Technology Platform (BTP) is a cloud-based platform that provides a range of services and capabilities for building, extending, and integrating applications. BTP allows us to manage the access and permissions of your users and groups by assigning them predefined or custom roles. A role is a collection of privileges that define what actions a user or a group can perform on a specific service or resource. In this document, you will learn how to create a custom role in BTP and assign it to a user or a group.

Creating a custom role

The procedure for creating the custom role varies based on the application we select in BTP.
For applications which are subscribed, below is the procedure.
  1. Open the SAP BTP cockpit.
  2. Go to your global account and subaccount.
  3. Choose Services Instances and Subscriptions in the navigation pane.
  4. To see your subscribed application, choose the Subscriptions tab.
  5. To get to the place where you can manage roles, choose the chevron next to your subscribed application.
  6. In the BTP cockpit, navigate to the service or resource that we want to create a custom role for. For example, if we want to create a custom role for the Cloud Foundry environment, go to the Cloud Foundry section.
  7. Click on the Roles tab and then click on the Create Role button.
  8. Enter a name and a description for custom role and click on the Next button.
  9.  Select the privileges that we want to include in your custom role. We can use the search and filter options to find the privileges that you need. We can also select or deselect all privileges in a category by clicking on the checkbox next to the category name.
  10.  Click on the Save button to create your custom role. We will see a confirmation message and your custom role will appear in the list of roles.

Assigning a custom role

To assign a custom role to a user or a group in BTP, follow these steps:
  1. In the BTP cockpit, navigate to the service or resource that we have created a custom role for.
  2. Click on the Assignments tab and then click on the Assign button.
  3. Select the user or the group that we want to assign the custom role to. We can use the search and filter options to find the user or the group that you need.
  4. Select the custom role that we want to assign from the list of roles. we can assign multiple roles to a user or a group by selecting more than one role.
  5. Click on the Assign button to assign the custom role. We will see a confirmation message and the user, or the group will appear in the list of assignments.

At this point of time creation of custom role is possible in only in Multitenant Applications Using the Cockpit, hence the requirement can be only fulfilled by creating the custom role collections.
